The Department of Geology at Government Degree College Kathua was founded in the year 1988, marking a significant milestone in the academic landscape of the institution. Initially, Surinder Singh Khajuria was appointed on an Adhoc basis to initiate the department's activities. However, this transitional phase was soon succeeded by the appointment of Dr. Yash Pal Kundal as a permanent Professor, bringing stability and leadership to the department's endeavors.

Undergraduate Programme
In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020 and following the Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS), the Department of Geology offers a comprehensive Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) with various pathways for specialization. The department provides students with the opportunity to engage with Geology as a major subject, minor subject, multidisciplinary study, and also through Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC). This versatile approach ensures that students can tailor their academic journey to their interests and career aspirations.
With an intake capacity of 80 students for each program in the first semester, the department facilitates a conducive learning environment. This size allows for personalized attention and effective interaction between students and faculty members, promoting a robust academic experience.

Currently, the Department of Geology does not offer a Postgraduate (PG) program. However, there are plans in place to introduce a Master of Science (MSc) program in the near future.
